Center investigators published 106 journal articles in the past year. These include articles by core investigators, as well as by affiliate investigators (articles by the latter are related to Center projects only). In addition, our staff made 88 conference presentations (either regional, national, or international).

A number of published articles by Center staff received significant publicity in the press this past year, including findings on:

  • How end-of-life wishes vary among racial and ethnic groups, between genders (Duffy)
  • The role of perspective in difficult health care decisions (Zikmund-Fisher, Ubel)
  • Patient characteristics and diagnoses associated with pain, fatigue, and depression at the end of life (Silveira)
  • How medical tragedy can spark innate emotional resilience (Ubel)
  • Facilitated peer support among patients with diabetes (Heisler, Piette)

One of our studies even made late night TV.  Center investigators Peter Ubel, Heather Lacey, and David Smith published an article this past spring showing that attitudes about happiness and aging contradict reality: older people are happier.  David Letterman, the host of CBS’ The Late Show, picked up on this study and mentioned it in his opening monologue. He said "You know, there's a new study out that shows that people get happier as they age...aren't I proof of that?"
